Nicely filmed at the closing night performance before a very enthusiastic audience.  There is a one minute blackout, just before “She’s Gone”.  Because this was the last performance, Steve Martin joined the band for the Entr’acte.  There were no speeches given after the show, but the curtain call was much longer than usual with Steve, Edie, and Walter all taking bows, and Steve doing a short impromptu tap number.   2 DVDs A

Moore (Tranio), Stacey Sergeant (Grumio), Teresa Avia Lim (Biondello).

This is an all-female version of the show presented by the Public Theatre’s Shakespeare In The Park.  It includes a lot of modern day references including a lot about Donald Trump.  It’s not a perfect capture, unfortunately; there are blackouts over 25 of the first 32 minutes, and there’s another 5-minute blackout about halfway through the show. What is captured is crystal clear.  At one point, the show is stopped due to a set malfunction, and Judy Gold improvs for about three minutes-and she’s hilarious.  B-

War Paint

7/29/16 ~ Chicago, IL

Patti LuPone (Helena Rubenstein), Christine Ebersole (Elizabeth Arden), John Dorsett (Tommy Lewis), Douglas Sills (Harry Fleming).

“Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden defined beauty standards for the first half of the 20th Century. Brilliant innovators with humble roots, both were masters of self-invention who sacrificed everything to become the country’s first major female entrepreneurs. They were also fierce competitors, whose 50-year tug-of-war would give birth to an industry. From Fifth Avenue society to the halls of Congress, their rivalry was relentless and legendary—pushing both women to build international empires in a world dominated by men”.  World Premiere musical from the acclaimed Broadway team of librettist Doug Wright (Grey Gardens, I Am My Own Wife, The Little Mermaid); composer Scott Frankel and lyricist Michael Korie (Grey Gardens, Far From Heaven); and director Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal, If/Then and Grey Gardens).  At one point Patti’s ring and bracelet fall off mid-song.  Well filmed.  One head appears in the bottom of the frame during the wider shots, but never gets in the way.   2 DVDs A-
