From Fifth Avenue society to the halls of Congress, their rivalry was relentless and legendary—pushing both women to build international empires in a world dominated by men”. This production was performed by a professional regional theatre, and looks almost exactly the Broadway production. The sound is a little distorted at times, almost as if the volume was too high for the recorder to handle. 2DVDs A-

Great video with an electric Broadway cast. Some difficulty in opening and a seat change by the taper, so video is here and there during that; some spotlight washout sometimes but beautiful color and picture. A little blooper during "Thank Goodness" when Morrible goes off about how Glinda came to
office and that whole deal. "..hence be known as Glinda the good officially" she forgets the lyric and goes off about how "you are glinda" Good video A

Filmed from left orchestra with a mix of wide shots, medium shots, and close ups. All of the medium shots and close ups are very clear; one head in the way of a small portion of the stage, but it only blocks the actor's feet/legs a few times. No One Mourns the Wicked is audio only, and Dear Old Shiz is very shaky and blurry at first; act two, No One Mourns the Wicked Reprise is audio only again, as is the first 30 seconds or so of Thank Goodness. No other cover ups during the show; very watchable; nice video 2 DVDs A-

Wicked
9/11/08 ~ Los Angeles, CA
Teal Wicks, Emily Rozek (s/b Glinda), Derrick Williams, Tim Talman (u/s The Wizard), Carol Kane, Briana Yacavone, Michael Drolet, David De Vries
Highlights, about 90 minutes total filmed from the left mezzanine; some spotlight washout, but most of it is very clear, and the sound is excellent throughout; mostly medium shots, but there are a mix of close-ups and wide shots as well. There's a small blooper in Popular when Emily goes to take the flower out of her hair, it gets stuck and she says, "Ouch, it's stuck." The right side and center of the stage are virtually unobstructed. Video has most of the show’s highlights B+

Teal Wicks and Angel Reda (u/s Elphaba), Emily Rozek, Derrick Williams, David Garrison, Linda Kerns (u/s Mme. Morrible), Briana Yacavone, Eddy Rioseco, David DeVries
Filmed from the left mezzanine with a mix of wide shots, medium shots, and close-ups; excellent sound throughout, and the color/clarity is great overall; some spotlight washout in the wide shots. There's one head in the way, but he only blocks a small portion of the very front of the stage, and there's an arm that briefly blocks the left side of the stage once or twice, but neither obstruction blocks the action. This was scheduled to be Teal's second to last performance, but she left after the train station scene due to illness and did not perform for her last night, so this was the last time she went on during the LA run. Also, watch for a very funny blooper in Popular when Emily and the orchestra get out of sync during the ballgown portion and she says, "Well, that didn't work, let's do it again," as she and Teal try to hold in their laughter; DVD also contains a concert by Angel Reda and Emily Rozek as a bonus feature. The concert was part of the Wicked Day festivities at The Americana at Brand in Pasadena, CA on 10/31/08. The concert was 15 minutes long and included The Wizard and I, Popular, and For Good. It's a very steady capture with great color, clarity, and sound. Otherwise, a nice video 2 DVDs A

A nice capture of Eden and Megan’s first performance back; filmed from the right balcony with a mix of wide shots, medium shots, and close-ups; sound is excellent throughout, and the color/clarity is great; some spotlight washout, especially in the wide shots, but not too bad; no heads in the way at all, but an arm blocks the very right edge of the stage in some wide shots; quite a few cover-ups through the first half of the first act, up to Popular, but most of them are very short. Nice capture; first act is complete, has almost no obstruction, and has only one very quick blackout during DTL but the second act is audio only for Thank Goodness, then Wicked Witch of the East and Wonderful are missing, then the rest of the act is complete starting with Set Those Monkeys Free, but there's some obstruction on the right and one quick blackout during I'm Not That Girl Reprise. This was the performance where the fire alarm goes off when No Good Deed starts. Merideth keeps going through half the song, while the alarms and lights are flickering. Finally an announcement was made and she walked off stage in character. The show resumes after the evactuation where she left off. Good clear video with excellent picture and sound A

Nicole Parker, Alli Mauzey, Aaron Tveit, Jayne Houdyshell, Anthony Galde (u/s Wizard), Cristy Candler, Alex Brightman, Timothy Britten Parker
First couple minutes of each act are blacked out, but it's full show from there.Very little obstruction overall; there's just one head/hand that pops into frame on the right once in a while; very little washout, just a little in some of the wides. Good sound and clear picture 2 DVDs A

Wicked
3/8/09 ~ Broadway
Nicole Parker, Alli Mauzey, Aaron Tveit, Anthony Galde (u/s Wizard), Jayne Houdyshell, Cristy Candler, Alex Brightman, Timothy Britten Parker
First few minutes of each act are blacked out; three very short blackouts during TWAI, OSD, and ALAYM. There is a head on the far right that was worked around, but it does block Morrible's speech during DG, and about half of Boq's piece of MOTWH; good mix of wides, mediums, and closeups throughout the show. There's very little washout overall, even in most of the wides; excellent sound throughout the show. Nice video 2 DVDs A

Wicked
3/28/09 ~ Fort Myers, FL
Marcie Dodd, Helene Yorke, Colin Donnell, Tom McGowan, Merilyn Caskey, Jacqui Graziano (u/s Nessarose), Ted Ely, David DeVries
Nice capture of the Second National Tour cast, with a big mishap when the power suddenly goes out in the middle of Thank Goodness. Helene and the rest of the cast keep right on going until a crew member comes onstage and stops the show. The dvd includes video of the entire debacle until the curtain goes down; video starts again at WWOTE, which was about two minutes after they restarted. As for the video, the first part of the show is mostly blacked out, but once it gets to TWAI, it's much better; dragon's head blocked Marcie's face during Defying Gravity, but other than that, there's virtually no obstruction. Nice video 2 DVDs A

Wicked

Not many zooms, spotlight washout, lots of wandering and a head in the way most of the time on the right side of the screen. Again if you are a wicked fan who has to have every Wicked bootleg out there, this is probably one you would want. Audio is good. Presume this is the same taper as 4/26/09 C-

One head in the middle that blocks the actors' feet/legs sometimes, and there are heads on either side that pop into frame occasionally; first couple of minutes of each act are blacked out, and there are two long-ish blackouts. One is from the middle of What Is This Feeling till part way through the classroom scene. The other is the last couple minutes of the show; the video ends at "it's looking at things another way," and the rest of the finale is audio only. 2 DVDs B+

Nice video of the Actor's Fund performance; first couple minutes of each act are blacked out, and a couple others here and there, but all short; quite a few heads in the way and they do get distracting; more close-ups than usual from this taper; includes curtain call and Nicolas's Actor's Fund speech; excellent sound throughout the show 2 DVDs A

Ends during wizard banishment. Shot from Mezzanine, with a bar in the way throughout and most of the time hides action and is just audio. Spotlight washout throughout. Basically this DVD is only for those who are Wicked fans who have to have every bootleg. Audio is good. D

A gorgeous video of the new Stuttgart cast. Shot from the center of the orchestra with almost no head obstruction - there is a head in the way of some stage-left scenes and it also gets into the shot a few times when that person moves (why do people feel the need to chat during shows?!), but such situations are shot around effectively. The video follows the action extremely well, with both zooms and wider shots (there are some gorgeous shots of the scenography and choreography due to my central location and lack of head obstruction) ; very little to no spotlight washout. Slightly shaky at times, but nothing distracting. A+

Laura Woyasz's first performance as Glinda in New York; washout throughout but gets better in Act 2; video has almost no obstructions; there is sometimes a head at the bottom of the screen and a few dropouts, the longest during "No One Mourns the Wicked"; completely missing is the first verse or so of "As Long As You're Mine" (it picks up at "I'll make every last moment last") due to battery change 2 DVDs A

First act heavy with obstructions and blackouts; second act is much better and has very few issues with a head in the way; some spotlight washout but a brighter setting on the tapers camera made the darker scenes easier to see; clear sound but the mix at the theatre was a little off, so some of the percussion sounds louder than it should. 2 DVDs B+

Filmed from the centre of the theatre's raised stalls, source recordings are completely free of any obstructions and provide a great view of the stage; colors are nice and vibrant and the coloring is almost identical on both source recordings, making for nice transitions between shots and the action is followed extremely well; two camcorders were used to film the show, so virtually everything is captured perfectly, even events happening at different places on the stage (the beginning of "What is this feeling?", various ensemble solo lines etc.); the two recordings are edited together so as to provide the best possible visual experience of the show. Xanadu

Patti Murin (u/s Clio), Cheyenne Jackson, Tony Roberts, Mary Testa, Jackie Hoffman, Curtis Holbrook, Kenita Miller, Andre Ward, Kate Loprest (u/s Euterpe)
Very nicely filmed, and crystal clear, although the first three or four minutes are shaky with heads in the way. But after the filmer settles, it's a great video. The DVD has been enhanced with animated menus and scene selections with chapter stops for all of the musical numbers; very funny improv line by Hoffman that stopped the show for a few minutes A

Alfred Drake, Barbara Cook, Celeste Holm. Norman Atkins, Norman Barrs, Bill Hayes.

The production, running 80 minutes, is abridged . The tale is narrated by Jack Point in a series of very well-written monologues. You Never Know
1991 ~ Los Angeles, CA, Revival
Kristin Chenoweth?? (I personally dont think it's Kristin), Donna McKechnie, David Garrison, Harry Groener. RARE!
A madcap farce of pre-Depression dandies and mistaken identities, highlight Cole Porter's 1929 musical You Never Know. This delightfully old-fashioned show is presented as a European-style chamber musical, with a small orchestra and only six players." Cole Porter has often referred to You Never Know as his worst show, and the show had a very short run of just 78 performances at the Winter Garden Theatre. Presented at the Pasadena Playhouse. Nicely filmed for the most part, but occasional "sta ge searching" where nothing is being filmed but the ceiling. Still, a surprisingly nice video for it's age. A-
